Dubai’s Emirates Airline has prohibited the use of pagers and walkie-talkies on its aircraft, following last month’s incidents involving these devices associated with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
The airline stated in a release on its website Friday that “all travelers on flights to, from, or via Dubai are not allowed to carry pagers and walkie-talkies in either checked or cabin baggage. “
It further noted that “Items discovered in passengers’ hand luggage or checked bags will be seized by Dubai Police. “
This decision comes weeks after pagers exploded simultaneously throughout Lebanon, followed by a similar occurrence with walkie-talkies. Lebanese authorities have attributed the attacks to Israel.
According to Lebanese officials, at least 37 individuals, including children, lost their lives in the dual device incidents, with nearly 3,000 others sustaining injuries.
A Lebanese security source informed that, at the time the explosive materials were “embedded” in the lithium battery of the pager and concealed in such an intricate manner that it was nearly impossible to detect.
As tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East, flight operations are still experiencing interruptions.
In its most recent announcement on Friday, Emirates, the largest airline in the region, indicated that flights to and from Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, remain suspended until and including October 15. Passengers transiting through Dubai to reach Beirut will also “not be permitted to travel from their point of origin until further notice,” it stated.
Emirates also mentioned that it would resume operations to Jordan’s capital, Amman, on Sunday, while its flights to and from Iraq and Iran will continue to be canceled until and including Monday. Numerous other airlines have similarly halted flights to Beirut and several other regional airports.
As tensions escalate in the Middle East, Emirates, and various airlines are vigilantly observing regional events to safeguard the well-being of passengers and crew. Numerous carriers have also halted or restricted flights to Beirut and other areas deemed high-risk. Travelers heading to impacted locations are urged to remain informed about any alterations to flight schedules and travel limitations.
