IndiGo Claims the Title of Largest International Airline in Sri Lanka
IndiGo, the premier low-cost carrier in India, has asserted itself as the largest international airline operating in Sri Lanka. The airline now facilitates travel between India and Sri Lanka with 54 weekly flights, reinforcing its role as a key player in regional connectivity.
The airline’s broadened network features flights to Colombo and Jaffna, significant cities in Sri Lanka, from major Indian cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
This growth underscores IndiGo’s determination to enhance air connectivity between the two nations, bolstering tourism, trade, and cultural exchanges. Vinay Malhotra, IndiGo’s Head of Global Sales, expressed his pride in this accomplishment, stating, “As the foremost foreign airline operating in Sri Lanka, with links to four Indian cities, we are committed to strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing tourism, and fostering economic growth between India and Sri Lanka.”
IndiGo’s augmented flight frequency caters to the rising demand for travel between the neighboring countries. This demand has been driven by a consistent uptick in Indian tourists visiting Sri Lanka, with over 200,000 arrivals documented in early 2024 alone. The airline’s effective connectivity has played a crucial role in bolstering Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, making it an attractive destination for leisure, business, and religious travelers from India.
Jaffna, a culturally diverse area in northern Sri Lanka, has also gained from IndiGo’s services. The airline’s flights to Jaffna bolster regional tourism and aid in the economic development of Sri Lanka’s northern provinces, in line with the country’s broader tourism objectives.
Through enhancing its offerings and extending its reach, IndiGo is not merely nurturing closer ties between India and Sri Lanka but also opening new avenues for tourism and economic cooperation. As the airline continues to focus on punctuality, affordability, and convenience, it remains a leader in regional aviation, paving the way for a more interconnected future for both nations.
The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau remarked, “I extend my warmest congratulations to IndiGo for becoming the largest foreign airline operating out of Sri Lanka, a significant achievement that signifies its dedication to improving connectivity and fortifying relationships between our countries. IndiGo’s increased flight frequency, including its services to Jaffna, showcases its commitment to the Northern Province’s growth, fostering economic progress, tourism, and cultural interactions. I also acknowledge Acorn Aviation, IndiGo’s GSA partner in Sri Lanka, for its over three decades of active involvement in promoting tourism and aviation in the Sri Lankan market, playing an essential role in advancing these industries.”
