Air India revealed on Wednesday that it will prioritize deploying its top narrowbody aircraft on five major metro routes starting in December. The airline indicated that Vistara A320-series aircraft will operate flights from Delhi to Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, as well as from Mumbai to Hyderabad and Bengaluru, featuring business, premium economy, and economy class seating. The merger between Air India and Vistara was finalized on November 12.
Air India’s chief executive officer and managing director, Campbell Wilson, stated that the integration of Vistara into Air India has created numerous new opportunities to enhance customer offerings. “By merging the strengths of both full-service airlines, we can consolidate our premier narrowbody services on routes where there is a demand for high-frequency and full-service options.”
Wilson mentioned that the airline plans to progressively extend its coverage to additional routes as Air India brings in new aircraft and finishes retrofitting its legacy narrowbody fleet by 2025.
A Refined Network: New Routes and Aircraft
Air India will incorporate Vistara’s state-of-the-art A320-series aircraft into its fleet for key metro routes. The five upgraded routes include:

These routes, identified by four-digit flight numbers beginning with “2” (for instance, AI2999 for Delhi-Mumbai), signify a transformation in Air India’s scheduling and connectivity strategy. The airline will ensure frequent service, operating over 150 daily flights across these routes.
Notable frequencies consist of 56 flights between Delhi and Mumbai, 36 flights between Delhi and Bengaluru, and 24 flights on the Delhi-Hyderabad route.

The newly introduced A320-series aircraft will provide a variety of seating options to accommodate different traveler preferences:

Premium Economy: Twenty-four seats with a 33-inch pitch and a 4-inch recline.
Economy Class: 132 seats offering a 29-inch pitch and a 3-inch recline.
Travelers on these flights will benefit from complimentary hot meals, access to premium lounges at major airports, and smooth connections to Air India’s international destinations. These offerings are designed to enhance the domestic flying experience, ensuring it meets the airline’s global standards.
Optimized Schedules for Seamless Travel
Air India is not only upgrading its aircraft but also refining its flight schedules to distribute departures evenly throughout the day. This approach guarantees convenience for passengers while sustaining competitive frequencies on essential routes.
CEO Campbell Wilson emphasized that the airline intends to broaden these services to more routes as it adds new aircraft and updates its legacy narrowbody fleet. This gradual enhancement is anticipated to carry on into 2025, highlighting Air India’s dedication to modernizing its operations.
Luxury Beyond Narrow-Bodies
For those travelers in pursuit of even more lavish experiences, Air India will persist in operating wide-body aircraft on routes linking Delhi to Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Utilizing Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 jets, these flights will offer premium services along with three-digit flight numbers.

This approach might encourage global airlines to reevaluate their India-focused operations, fostering an environment of competition and innovation.
Air India’s overhaul of its domestic routes following the Vistara merger marks a pivotal move in transforming air travel in India. By launching luxury cabins and streamlining operations, the airline is enhancing the travel experience, establishing new benchmarks in domestic aviation, and aligning itself with global standards.
